The Gosaukamm circumnavigation is one of the most beautiful tours that takes you from the Salzkammergut into Salzburg Land and back.

For the standard route (22 km & 1880 m elevation gain), you should plan for 8-9 hours. We recommend an overnight stay with a breathtaking sunset and excellent dinner at our Stuhlalm. For experienced mountaineers, there is also an alpine variant (certain sections are extremely exposed and partially secured with steel cables) with approximately 2500 m of ascent and descent!

2-Day Tour: Gosausee 932 m – Steiglpass 2015 m – Hofpürglhütte 1705 m – Schwarzkogelsteig 1600 m – Stuhlalm 1467 m (overnight stay) – Start ALPINE VARIANT -> Strichkogl 2034 m – Steinriesenkogl 2008 m – via Donnerkogel & Gablonzerhütte 1550 m - return to Gosausee.

The Gosaukamm circumnavigation can certainly be done in both directions. However, for me and many locals, there is only one way to go: clockwise, starting with the ascent over Steiglpass towards Hofpürglhütte.

'First towards the sun, and then with the sun at your back.'

The decision of whether to do it in one day or as a leisurely hike over two days with an overnight stay in a hut is something everyone must answer for themselves. The tour is definitely physically demanding, and sure-footedness is essential! Additionally, be sure to plan enough liquids (at least 2 liters) as there are no opportunities to refill until Hofpürglhütte!

Section 1: From Gosausee to Steiglpass

From the right side of the lake, trail number 612 first leads briefly over a meadow before branching left into the forest and ascending steeply. In the morning, it is still pleasantly cool, the dew sparkles, and as you cross the first scree field below the Gosaukamm, sunbeams glisten over the opposite peak. After a stretch through the forest, lush green gives way to alpine gray. From here on, the path traverses a barren stony desert, where one must pay close attention to the painted red and white markers. A bit of light scrambling adds variety before you catch sight of the final gently ascending section to Steiglpass.

Section 2: From Steiglpass to Stuhlalm

Upon reaching Steiglpass, you'll be greeted by a magnificent view of Bischofsmütze (2459 m) and the Gosaugletscher. Ahead lies a cable-secured passage descending towards Hofpürglhütte, which is already in sight. From the hut, take the Austriaweg 611, where one of the most beautiful sections of the hike begins. Returning to blooming flowers and alpine rhododendrons, the path gently winds its way for the first stretch, then continues through a pasture area.

At Schwarzkogelsteig, there is a notch that leads steeply down with cable protection before the path switchbacks further into the basin towards Stuhlloch. Once you conquer this section, the view back is particularly rewarding. Ascending through the dwarf pines, the terrain opens up. On a grassy plateau, you will finally see Stuhlalm, where you can look forward to a delightful break or an overnight stay in the hut.

Section 3: From Stuhlalm over Strichkogel and Donnerkogel

From Stuhlalm, it takes about 2 hours via Austriaweg 611 (below Donnerkogel) to reach Gablonzerhütte, with the narrow hiking trail leading over several scree fields.

**Alpine Variant:** From Stuhlalm, ascend towards Strichkogel (2034 m)—initially through narrow dwarf pines, then freely over smaller rock steps to the summit. The hiking time is approximately 1.5 hours, and there is no summit cross. Return to the junction, where the partially secured path begins towards Donnerkogel: a steep descent into the cirque, followed by easier but exposed climbing back up through dwarf pines to Steinriesenkogel (2008 m). Again, there is no summit cross, but a prominent vertical eastern wall awaits.

The descent into the notch is straightforward. After that, continue towards Großer Donnerkogel (2055 m). For those still eager for more, you can also tackle this summit (about ½ hour from Steinriesenkogel). Otherwise, head down towards Zwieselalm/Törleck.

Section 4: Törleck – Gosausee

Almost there! Near the Törleck transmitter, where the entrance to the Donnerkogel climbing route is located, you will have a unique view of Gosausee and the Gosaugletscher.

If you wish, you can stop at Gablonzerhütte and then either take the Gosaukammbahn or walk through the forest, steadily descending on the path to Gosausee.
